Research Facilities

The reserve runs a small herbarium, the Buffelskloof Herbarium (BNRH), which is available to all visitors. The herbarium contains in excess of 10 000 specimens and includes a comprehensive collection of the plants occurring on Buffelskloof Nature Reserve and the surrounding properties along the northern Drakensberg escarpment of Mpumalanga. In addition, it houses an extensive collection of ferns (Pteridophyta), Moraceae, Asparagus, as well as plants of Mozambique.
The herbarium collections are data-based using the PRECIS (Pretoria Computerised Information System) database used widely in southern Africa. The collection data (without photographs) can be accessed through collections.
A plant collecting permit for Buffelskloof Private Nature Reserve is available, upon request and approval.
